SASSA Black Card is a debit card issued to SASSA grant beneficiaries. The card is issued by Postbank and can be used for cashless payments at participating stores and service providers. Beneficiaries can use the Black Card to buy groceries, pay utility bills, purchase fuel at participating gas stations, and make other everyday payments.

Before the Black Card, SASSA grant beneficiaries commonly received the SASSA Gold Card. Postbank has been replacing the Gold Card with the new Black Card as part of the card replacement process. The Black Card also provides features that were not available with the older Gold Card.

In this guide, I will explain everything you need to know about the SASSA Black Debit Card, including how to apply for the card, how to activate and use it, where you can use it, and how beneficiaries can get the most from its features.

What is a SASSA Black Card?

The SASSA Black Card is the latest debit card issued by Postbank for South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) grant beneficiaries. The card replaces the older SASSA Gold Card and provides a safer and more reliable way to receive social grant payments.

SASSA Black Card

Beneficiaries can use the SASSA Black Card to withdraw cash from ATMs, make purchases at retail stores, and access grant funds without opening a bank account. The card supports all major SASSA grants, including the Older Person’s Grant, Disability Grant, Child Support Grant, Foster Child Grant, Care Dependency Grant, and the SRD R370 Grant.

How to Switch from Gold SASSA Card to Black Card?

SASSA and Postbank require all beneficiaries to replace the old SASSA Gold Card with the new SASSA Black Card. The Black Card offers improved security and uninterrupted access to grant payments. Completing the replacement early helps beneficiaries avoid long queues and possible delays during the final weeks of the migration period.

Follow these steps to switch from the SASSA Gold Card to the SASSA Black Card:

  1. Find your nearest Postbank service point. Dial *120*355# on your mobile phone and follow the prompts to locate the closest card replacement centre.
  2. Visit an approved card replacement location. Postbank has designated several retail partners for card replacements, including:
    1. Shoprite
    2. Checkers
    3. Pick n Pay
    4. Boxer
    5. Usave
    6. SPAR
  3. Carry a valid identification document. Bring your original South African ID book, Smart ID card, or a valid temporary ID document. Postbank staff will verify your identity before issuing the new card.
  4. Complete biometric verification. The service agent will capture your fingerprints and verify your identity through the biometric system. This process protects your grant account from fraud and unauthorized access.
  5. Collect your SASSA Black Card. After successful verification, Postbank will issue your new SASSA Black Card. The card is ready to use immediately. However, you need to choose your secure PIN  for grant payment ATM withdrawals, balance inquiries, and purchases at participating merchants.

Replace your card as soon as possible to continue receiving SASSA grant payments without interruption.

How to Activate and Use SASSA Black Card?

There is no need to activate the SASSA Black Card. You can use it right after receiving it from Postbank. However, using this card is also very easy. Here is how to use Black Card.

  • For SASSA Grant Payment Withdrawals: Visit any Postbank ATM near your location. Insert your Black card into the ATM. Now enter the amount that you need to withdraw, enter your secure PIN, and get your cash from the ATM.
  • Use at Retail Stores: Just swipe or insert your Black Card into the retail point-of-sale machines, enter your secure PIN, and that’s it.

Note: You can use the SASSA Black Card at all the merchants who accept Visa or Mastercard.

Beware of Black Card Scams

Before you go and get your Black Card, you need to stay away from scammers. Here are the precautions that you should take when getting and using your Black Card.

  • Do not share your PIN with anyone:  Postbank, SASSA, and bank officials will never ask for your PIN.
  • Inspect the ATM before inserting your card: Look for suspicious devices that may be used to copy your card information.
  • Treat your card like cash: Keep it in a safe place and never leave it unattended.
  • Cover the keypad when entering your PIN: This prevents other people or hidden cameras from seeing your PIN.
  • Never hand your card to strangers: Only allow authorized staff at official Postbank service points to assist you.
  • Collect your card immediately after every transaction: Do not leave your card in the ATM or payment terminal.
  • Keep your cellphone number updated with SASSA and Postbank: This helps you receive important account notifications and security alerts.
  • Check your account balance and transaction history regularly: Report any unauthorized transaction to Postbank immediately.
  • Do not accept offers from people who promise to speed up the card replacement process: SASSA and Postbank do not use agents who charge money for issuing the Black Card.
