The SRD grant payment is R370 per month for people who are either unemployed or living in extreme poverty. But is this payment enough for someone with no income to buy basic groceries? Well, to test this, we did in-depth research on different grocery stores to find out the latest prices of some basic groceries.

This article provides all the details about whether an SRD grant beneficiary can survive with R370 in 2026. What are the other options to fulfil the monthly grocery expenses, and can we appeal to SASSA to increase the amount of the SRD grant? Keep reading to find all the answers to these important questions.

Can You Buy Basic Grocery Items with SRD R370 Grant Payment in 2026?

We, as a team of Grant Guides, did research to find out whether an SRD grant beneficiary can survive with an R370 payment. For this, we checked the latest prices of some basic groceries, including major brands and cheap ones. And here are our findings:

SRD Payment Vs Grocery Item Prices 2026

So, as you can see above, the total price comes to R538.86, which is the lowest total price for each grocery item. The grant covers only 68.7% of that basket, leaving a shortfall of R168.86. The first eight items alone come to R362.92, so the money is finished before the rice is even in the trolley.

Maize meal at R109.99 and cooking oil at R79.99 together take R189.98, more than half the grant.

Swapping to the cheapest brands on the shelf doesn’t change the picture either. The same basket built from the lowest tracked prices in the PMBEJD Household Affordability Index still costs R430.33. In a nutshell, a full month of basic groceries no longer fits inside one R370 payment.

What Can SRD R370 Grant Actually Buy?

Now you understand that the R370 payment can not buy basic groceries. However, if we take an actual estimate by adding all the expenses linked with the grant, then the grant payment goes even lower.

For example, if a beneficiary has to travel from home to the post office, there are transport expenses and lunch costs while waiting for the grant in the office, etc.

That is why SRD R370 is almost 50% lower than the actual payment that people needed. The grant payment should increase to at least R1000. For this, we have already added a page to vote for the SRD grant increase to R1000.

SRD Grant Payment Vs Minimum Wage in 2026

The minimum wage comparison makes the SRD picture even clearer. South Africa’s National Minimum Wage rose to R30.23 per hour on 1 March 2026, up by R1.44 from R28.79 in 2025, a 5% increase announced by Employment and Labour Minister Nomakhosazana Meth in Government Gazette No. 54075 on 3 February 2026.

The same R30.23 rate covers domestic workers and farm workers, while workers on the Expanded Public Works Programme get a lower R16.62 per hour. A full-time worker on a 45-hour week now earns at least R5,894.85 a month before deductions, and R5,239.87 on a 40-hour week.

Put the SRD R370 payment next to these numbers, and it shrinks fast. The grant equals about 12 hours of work at the minimum wage, roughly a day and a half of labour. The basic grocery basket priced in November 2026 at R538.86 takes almost 18 hours of minimum-wage work to pay for.

In other words, the monthly grant that millions rely on for food is worth less than two days of the lowest legal pay in the country.

How to Buy Monthly Groceries Without Relying on the SRD Grant?

We have also found some ways to cover basic monthly groceries while not relying on SRD grant payment. So here are the other options in 2026:

  • Check other Grants: You might be missing one. A Child Support Grant pays R580 a month, and R870 with the caregiver top-up.
  • Join the Municipal Indigent Register: You will get free water and electricity; it will save some money for food.
  • Use Free Food Support: Food banks, soup kitchens, and school meals cut the bill.
  • Buy Smarter: Join a grocery stokvel, buy staples in bulk, and chase loyalty specials.
  • Work a Day or Two: Eight hours at the R30.23 minimum wage pays R241.84. Two days nearly covers the basket.
  • Grow and Swap Protein: Grow cabbage and spinach from your garden, and sugar beans instead of meat.
  • Avoid Food Debt: Never buy food on Mashonisa credit.
