SASSA offers different types of grants for vulnerable South African citizens. Social grants reach more people in South Africa than any other form of state support. According to the National Treasury’s 2026 Budget Review, about 26.5 million people will receive a social grant in the 2026/27 financial year.

However, to apply for these SASSA social grants, the applicant can use two methods. One is simple and easy, and the other is a bit hectic and time-consuming.

I am talking about the online SASSA application method. This method is simple, easy, and quick. You don’t need to leave your home or stand in any queues. I have explained the process of how to apply for SASSA social grants online using the SASSA Services portal.

What is the SASSA Services Portal?

The SASSA Services Portal is the agency’s official self-service website (services.sassa.gov.za) for permanent social grants. It is separate from the SRD portal, which handles the R370 Social Relief of Distress Grant only. A registered account on the services portal lets you:

  • Apply online for grants such as the Older Persons Grant, Disability Grant, Care Dependency Grant, Foster Child Grant, Child Support Grant and Grant-in-Aid.
  • View and track the status of an application you submitted.
  • Update your personal details, cellphone number, address and banking details.
  • Download SASSA forms.
  • Complete your e-Life certification when SASSA asks you to confirm that you are still alive.

None of these services cost anything. If any person or website asks you to pay for registration or for a grant application, it is a scam.

What Do You Need Before You Register?

Have the following ready before you open the portal, because the form asks for these details in one sitting:

  • Your status in South Africa: The portal accepts South African citizens, permanent residents, and refugees. You choose your citizenship status on the form.
  • Your 13-digit ID number: This is the number on your identity document, temporary ID, or refugee permit. It becomes your username for the account, so it has to be typed exactly as printed.
  • Your name as it appears on your ID: The surname and full name on the form must match your identity document.
  • A valid email address: SASSA uses your email for account notifications and for confirmations.
  • Your own active cellphone number: The number must be a South African number that is registered in your own name, because SASSA sends a one-time PIN to it by SMS to verify that the account really belongs to you. A number that belongs to someone else will not work for this step.

You do not need your banking details at this stage. Bank information is only asked for later, inside the application form of the grant you apply for.

How to Register on the SASSA Services Portal?

Follow these steps in order. The whole process normally takes a few minutes when your documents and your phone are with you.

How to Register on the SASSA Services Portal

Step 1: Open the portal and start registration

Go to the SASSA services portal at services.sassa.gov.za. On the home page, find the card that reads “REGISTER A NEW ACCOUNT” and click the “Register” button below it.

A dialog opens with the heading “Client Registration Consent“. It explains South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and the site’s cookie consent. Tick the “I AGREE” checkbox, then click “Apply“. The button stays disabled until you tick the box, so this step cannot be skipped.

Step 3: Complete the Client Registration form

The registration form asks for your details in this order:

Citizenship, ID number, ID document type, ID number again to confirm it, title (Mr, Mrs or Miss), surname, full name, email address, password, password again to confirm it, and your cellphone number.

Work through the form slowly. A single wrong digit in the ID number or cellphone number is the most common reason registration fails.

Step 4: Set a strong password

Your password must be at least 8 characters long and contain a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. Do not use a common word, your name, or a close variation of either, because the system rejects weak passwords. Type the same password in the confirm field, and keep it somewhere safe. You will use this password with your ID number every time you log in.

Step 5: Submit the form and enter the one-time PIN

Submit the completed form to get a One-Time PIN (OTP) by SMS to the cellphone number you entered. Keep the browser page open while you wait for the message. Type the PIN into the space provided on the page to complete your registration. If you closed the browser or the PIN expired, go back to the login screen and request a new PIN.

Your account is now created. You can log in straight away with your ID number and the password you just set.

How to Log in to your Services Portal Account?

On the portal home page, click “LOGIN“. The login form asks for two things only: your Identity Number and your Password. Enter your 13-digit ID number as the username, add your password, and click “Log In“. The form also offers a “Remember username” option if you are using your own device.

Two points are confusing here. You do not log in with your email address, and the services portal does not use a cellphone OTP for normal logins, even though the SRD system works differently. If you see “Forgot your Password?” on the login form, that link is the start of the password reset described below.

How to Submit SASSA Grant Application on Services Portal Online?

Once you have successfully registered on the Services Portal, you can now apply for six SASSA social grants:

  1. Older Persons
  2. Care Dependency
  3. Foster Child
  4. Disability
  5. Child Support
  6. Grant-in-Aid

Follow the steps to apply for any of the above-mentioned grants online.

  1. Log in and choose the option to “Apply for a grant”.
  2. Select the grant type, for example, the Child Support Grant.
  3. Complete the screening questionnaire. Answer every question according to the details on your ID.
  4. Fill in the application form. The system generates an affidavit as part of the application. Print the affidavit and have it certified by a Commissioner of Oaths. Also print and sign the Consent for Bank Payment form.
  5. Upload clear, certified copies of all required documents in PDF format. The portal shows you a list of any documents that are still outstanding.
  6. Submit the documents. SASSA confirms receipt by SMS and email, with a reference number that you keep for tracking.

Your application date is the date SASSA receives all your documents, and processing can take up to three months. While you wait, you can log in at any time and check the status of the application.

Statuses you may see include Submitted, Assessed, Documents Outstanding, Pending, and Incomplete Saved. Documents Outstanding means SASSA still needs something from you, so act on it quickly.

Common Registration Problems Fixes

The One-Time PIN Does Not Arrive

Check that the cellphone number on the form is your own number and that every digit is correct. Weak signal is another common cause, so move to a place with a stronger signal, restart the phone, and request a new PIN from the login screen. Remember that the PIN is only valid for a short time, so enter it as soon as the SMS arrives.

The Portal says your ID Number is Already Registered

This means an account already exists for your ID number. Do not try to register a second account. Log in with your ID number and password instead, or use the password reset if you no longer remember the password. If you are sure you never registered, treat it seriously, because someone may have used your ID number. Report it to the SASSA fraud hotline on 0800 701 701.

You Forgot your Password

Open the login form and click “Forgot your Password?”. Enter your ID number, and SASSA sends an OTP to the cellphone number registered on your account. Enter the OTP, then choose a new password and confirm it. You can log in with the new password immediately.

Your Cellphone Number Changed, or the SIM was Lost

If you can still log in, update the number inside your account under your existing grants and beneficiary details. If you cannot log in because the OTP goes to the old number, visit a SASSA office with your ID document, or call the SASSA helpline on 0800 60 10 11 for guidance. Keep your number updated, because SASSA relies on it for verification and payment notifications.

SASSA Services Portal vs the SRD Portal

Many people mix up the two systems, so it helps to be clear about the difference.

F.A.Q

Yes. Registration, grant applications and status checks are all free. Anyone who charges you for these services is running a scam.

South African citizens, permanent residents and refugees can register. The form asks for your citizenship status and your ID document type, which includes an identity document, a temporary ID, and a refugee permit. A foreign passport on its own is not accepted on this portal.

No. The number must be your own and registered in your name. SASSA verifies your account by sending a one-time PIN to that number, and the same number is used later for password resets and notifications.

No. Registration only creates your account. After registering, you still have to apply for the grant from inside the account, submit your documents, and wait for SASSA to assess the application.

Yes. A trusted person who helps you, known as a procurator, can register an account to help manage grants for the people they assist. Only give your ID number and password to someone you fully trust, and never share your password with strangers.

Nothing is lost. Return to the portal, open the login screen, and request a new PIN to continue. Your details are only saved once the registration is completed with the PIN.
